Changes to Services

As from the beginning of July 2017, the 8am Holy Communion service will be held only on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month, and the 6.30pm Evensong service will be held only on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. Click here for details of the August Services.

A Message from the Revd Dr Ian White

You will all be aware by now of recent changes to the programme of services at Adel Parish Church: from the beginning of July, 8am Holy communion is held on the first and third Sundays of the month and Evensong on the second and fourth Sundays. However, sometimes there are five Sundays in the month and we haven’t decided yet what to do on these occasions.

Our Junior Church is thriving with record attendances most weeks, mainly of quite young children, so one of the most obvious ‘gaps’ in our regular congregations is older children. From many conversations I have had with families and others there is a clear reason for this, and that is related to the number of other activities that take place on Sunday mornings. Junior football, rugby, cricket, dance classes, music lessons, and many more, mean that this age group, and their parents, find it difficult to come to church at our usual times.

So, perhaps this is where fifth Sundays could come in? Obviously, this would not involve a weekly commitment; just a few times over the course of a year. But the question is – what sort of service should it be?

Is this something you could think about over the summer, and let me have some feedback when you have?

For example, should the service involve Holy Communion or not? What other types of activity or content would you like to see? What time should it begin? (Maybe early, mid or late afternoon, or early evening?) How long should it last? Should it be in church or in our Church Hall, thereby allowing a less formal set-up (‘Café Church’ is becoming quite a popular approach), and should refreshments be included? And I’m sure lots of other ideas will come to mind, so do let me know.

Obviously, bearing in mind the age-group we want to reach, I’d be most interested to hear from the young people themselves, and their parents, but everyone is welcome to respond. Either have a word with me when you see me, email me at rev.ianwhite@tesco.net, or put pen to paper and drop me a line. Our Worship Committee will be considering this over the coming weeks, so any input would be greatly appreciated.
